Two weeks later, the crowd shifts to people standing in a dark field at Cranbrook watching a partial lunar eclipse. Same road, same zip code, two entirely different experiences of living here.
If you already own a home in Bloomfield Hills, you know the trick to August is not choosing between them. It is planning around Dream Cruise Saturday so you can enjoy everything else.
The thesis, up front
The best August in Bloomfield Hills belongs to residents who treat August 12 as Cranbrook's real headliner day and Dream Cruise Saturday as the day to stay off Woodward unless you have a plan. The programming is denser and more local than the calendar suggests, and it rewards knowing the campus, the shuttle, and which restaurants can actually seat you.
August 12: Cranbrook's double-header
The Cranbrook Institute of Science at 39221 Woodward stacks two very different sky events onto a single Wednesday, and the pairing is unusual enough to plan a day around.

Two eclipse-adjacent events on the same day, on a 315-acre National Historic Landmark campus that most residents drive past weekly without setting foot on, is the kind of programming that doesn't repeat. If you have kids in elementary or middle school, the daytime slot is the easier sell. If you don't, the late-night Perseids viewing is the one worth staying up for. The campus lawns off Institute Way are darker than anywhere in your subdivision.
Dream Cruise Saturday, from a Bloomfield Hills point of view
Most coverage of the Woodward Dream Cruise is written from Ferndale or Royal Oak. From here, the picture is different. The official cruise runs Saturday, August 15, 2026, from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm along 16 miles of Woodward Avenue through nine Oakland County communities, starting in Ferndale and passing through Pleasant Ridge, Berkley, Huntington Woods, Royal Oak, Birmingham, Bloomfield Township, and Bloomfield Hills before ending in downtown Pontiac. We are the second-to-last stop, which changes the calculus.
A few things a resident already knows, plus a few worth adding to the mental map:
- The cruise runs the third Saturday in August, 9:00 am to 9:00 pm, and Woodward through Bloomfield Hills is effectively a slow-moving car show by mid-morning.
- The free SMART shuttle runs the full route from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Ferndale to downtown Pontiac. If you want to see the cars without moving your own, park at a north-end lot and hop on.
- Side streets within a few blocks of Woodward fill by early morning, and many neighborhoods post resident-only restrictions. If you live off Long Lake or Lone Pine, expect strangers looking for parking.
- Local satellite events cluster on Friday and Saturday: Dream Cruise 2026: Celebrate the Classics at The Village Club runs Saturday, August 15 from 3:00 pm, and Dream Cruising at The Kingsley Bloomfield Hills - a Doubletree by Hilton opens Friday, August 14 at 10:00 am.
- Farther north on Woodward in Bloomfield Hills, the 2026 HEMI'Nsanity gathering runs Saturday, August 15 from 8:00 am at 43816 Woodward Ave. Worth knowing about if you're trying to route around it.
The counterintuitive move on Dream Cruise Saturday is to be a pedestrian in your own town. Park at The Village Club or walk down from a Long Lake side street, and the day becomes a very different experience than sitting in traffic on Woodward.
Where to eat when Woodward is a parking lot
Reservations matter more than menus this weekend. The reliable near-Woodward options in and around Bloomfield Hills:
- Zalman's on Woodward, inside The Kingsley, is a staple in Bloomfield Hills since opening as part of the Kingsley Hotel, and it happens to sit right where the Dream Cruising at The Kingsley event unfolds.
- Joe Muer Seafood on Woodward, which continues the tradition of dining and service excellence from a downtown Detroit original that dates to 1929.
- Andiamo Bloomfield, described on OpenTable as centrally located in Bloomfield Township with Northern Italian decor, family owned and operated since 1989.
- Eddie Merlot's, perched on the corner of Woodward and Big Beaver, useful if you're viewing cars from the Birmingham end of the route.
- Bill's, which took over the location where the celebrated Fox & Hounds Restaurant once stood. Longtime residents will recognize the building.
- Zao Jun, currently listed by OpenTable as the best reviewed restaurant in Bloomfield Hills, and off the Woodward line, which is exactly the point on cruise day.
Book by early August. Walk-ins on the 15th are a losing bet.
The quieter second half of the month
The last two weekends of August are underused by residents, and Cranbrook is the reason.
On the night of Thursday, August 27, from 8:00 pm to 1:00 am, the Institute hosts a late-night Partial Lunar Eclipse event. Two sky events at Cranbrook in the same month is unusual. Two that both begin at 8 pm and run past midnight is closer to unique.
Two days later, Saturday, August 29 from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm brings After Dark: Pages & Pours, an ages 18-plus program. This is the version of Cranbrook that families with school-age kids rarely see: the campus after hours, without a stroller in sight. If you have been meaning to bring an out-of-town guest somewhere they can't get in their own city, this is the night.
Worth stacking with dinner in the same corridor. The Bake Shop's Bloomfield Hills expansion has already become the new spot for special occasions and lovely breakfast experiences, which makes it a natural morning-after stop if you're hosting.
A resident's shortcut through the weekend
If you want a single plan that captures the best of what's happening without spending a Saturday in traffic, here it is:
- Wednesday, August 12, late morning. Bring the kids to Cranbrook's partial solar eclipse Discovery Day. Two hours on campus, safe viewing setup, home by lunch.
- Wednesday, August 12, evening. Come back after dinner for the Perseids. You do not need to drive to northern Michigan for a dark sky. You already live near one.
- Friday, August 14. Skip Saturday's chaos entirely. Walk over to Dream Cruising at The Kingsley when it opens at 10 am, then have lunch at Zalman's without the crush.
- Saturday, August 15. If you go at all, park at The Village Club by 2:30 pm for the 3:00 pm event, or use the SMART shuttle from a spot north of Square Lake. Do not drive Woodward.
- Thursday, August 27, late. Head back to Cranbrook after dark for the partial lunar eclipse. Bring a chair.
- Saturday, August 29. Book Pages & Pours ahead. It's the closest thing to a private after-hours pass to the Institute you're going to get all year.
Six touches, all inside a fifteen-minute drive of your driveway, none of them requiring you to fight for a curb spot on Woodward.

Most published guides to August around Detroit treat Dream Cruise as the whole story and Cranbrook as background scenery. From inside Bloomfield Hills, that's backward. The cruise is one day.
